Prospective students

PhD study
1. Check the fit
Dr Escribano supervises PhD research in three areas: humanitarian logistics and disaster response, manned and unmanned airspace management including the safe integration of drones, and the control of multi-modal autonomous fleets. See the Research and Publications pages, and frame your interest around one of these areas.
2. Check your eligibility
Applicants are expected to hold a first-class degree, or international equivalent, in engineering or another quantitative discipline such as mathematics, computer science or physics. International applicants also need to meet Imperial’s English language requirements, which can be completed after applying, as a condition of an offer.
3. Plan your funding
Funded positions in the group are advertised when they become available. Most PhD students are funded through Imperial and departmental scholarships, or through scholarship schemes in their home countries:
- President’s PhD Scholarships, Imperial’s flagship scheme
- Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering scholarships
- All Imperial scholarships
Imperial's scholarships are highly competitive, with many more strong applicants than awards. Candidates are nominated by their prospective supervisor and assessed on academic achievement, including grades and ranking within their cohort, research potential and references. Please get in touch well before the scholarship deadlines, so there is time to discuss a project before you apply.
4. Get in touch
Email Dr Escribano with “PhD enquiry” and your topic in the subject line. Attach your CV and transcripts, and include a short paragraph (no more than half a page) on the research question you would like to pursue and how it connects to the group’s work.
5. Apply
If there is a good fit, you will be invited to apply through Imperial’s online admissions system. The application includes a two-page statement: one page on your background and motivation, and one page setting out your proposed research.
Postdoctoral fellowships
There is currently no dedicated funding for postdoctoral positions. If you would like to propose a project for an externally funded fellowship, please get in touch with a CV and an outline of your idea. Relevant schemes include:
UROP and summer internships
Summer research placements are open to Imperial undergraduates studying engineering, mathematics or computer science; external candidates cannot be accepted at present. See the UROP programme, and email Dr Escribano by the start of the Spring Term to register your interest.
